Petrified wood slab from the State of Washington. Washington State has the largest and most diverse amount of petrified wood in North America. So much of an abundance that it is the state gem. This specimen is conifer wood and is one of the slabs I cut in my lapidary workshop. Petrified wood it the result of large flooding. The wood is buried in the muck and is deprived of oxygen. Over millions of years the minerals in the ground replace the wood and it becomes fossilized. This piece is ready to be displayed. The width is 5 3/4″. The height is 4 3/4″. The thickness is 5/16″.
